If you're looking at Greenwich, CT real estate and still need to get into Manhattan for work, dinners, or the occasional Broadway show, the commute is what decides it. Here's what it looks like, not the theoretical version, the one my clients live with every day.
Greenwich sits about 28 to 30 miles from Midtown Manhattan, depending on which part of town you're measuring from, and which route you take. By car, that's 40 to 45 minutes on a good day on I-95 or the Merritt Parkway. On a bad day, weekday rush hour or a summer Friday, it can run well past an hour. That's the honest range, not the brochure version. Close enough that Greenwich works as a real commuter town, not a weekend escape, and different enough once you're home that it doesn't feel like the city followed you.
Metro-North's New Haven Line runs through four stations in town: Greenwich, Cos Cob, Riverside and Old Greenwich. Express trains reach Grand Central in about 41 minutes. Local trains run closer to an hour. Trains run about every 30 minutes through the day, and a one-way ticket runs roughly $12 off-peak to $17 or $18 at peak hours.
This is where local knowledge matters more than a schedule. Greenwich station, right downtown, gets the most express service and is walkable from parts of central Greenwich. Cos Cob, Riverside and Old Greenwich stations serve their neighborhoods well. Almost all express trains serve these stations as well as Greenwich. Parking is the real variable. Some station lots, if not all, have resident waitlists for parking passes, but all have daily parking spots you can use and pay for.
For a once-a-week trip into the city, driving is often simpler. For a daily commute, most of my clients take the train. It skips the parking, the bridges, and the tunnel stress, and the time on board turns into something useful, email, a book, or just quiet before the day starts.
Greenwich gives you a real commute, not a compromise. You get the space, the schools, and the pace of a Connecticut town with New York close enough to stay part of your regular life.

Is there a direct train from Greenwich to Grand Central?
Yes. Metro-North's New Haven Line runs straight from all four Greenwich stations into Grand Central Terminal, no transfer required.
How much does a Metro-North ticket from Greenwich to NYC cost?
A one-way ticket runs roughly $12 to $18, off-peak and higher during peak commuting hours. Fares moved twice in 2026, so it's worth checking the current MTA schedule before you plan around a number.
Do Greenwich train stations have parking?
All do, but it varies by station and can mean a waitlist for a permit spot. Worth checking on the specific station near any house you're considering before it becomes part of your daily routine.
Is the commute different from Cos Cob, Riverside or Old Greenwich compared to downtown Greenwich?
The ride itself is close in length, because the downtown Greenwich station is a little closer to NYC than the other three.
Can I work from the train?
Most riders find the New Haven Line comfortable enough for a laptop or a tablet, especially outside the most crowded peak departures. Wi-Fi is available on board.
